A lightning arrestor, or lightning protection device, is a structure designed to protect buildings, objects, and people from the destructive effects of lightning. Lightning carries a tremendous amount of electrical energy that can severely damage buildings, electrical equipment or endanger lives. A lightning arrestor conducts the electrical discharge safely into the ground, protecting the building from a direct hit and minimizing the risk of fire or damage.

The base of the lightning rod is a metal rod that is placed at the highest point of the building - this can be the roof, chimney or other elevated location. This rod is designed to catch the lightning and guide it safely along the ground to the lightning rod, thus diverting the lightning energy away from the building. High-quality materials such as copper, stainless steel or aluminum are used to make lightning rods because they have high conductivity and corrosion resistance, ensuring the long life and reliability of the protection system.

A lightning arrester is generally made up of three main parts: the arresting device, the leads and the earthing. Leads are the conductors that carry the lightning energy from the intercepting device to the ground. They can be installed on the outside of a building, but are often placed covertly for aesthetic reasons. These conductors are securely connected to the earth ground - a metallic system in the ground that conducts lightning to the soil.

A quality lightning protection system installation is important not only for the safety of the building, but also for the protection of the electronic equipment in the building. Electronics are very sensitive to the sudden changes in current and voltage that lightning strikes can cause. Therefore, lightning protection systems are often supplemented by so-called surge protectors, which are installed directly into the building's electrical wiring and protect the electrical circuits from dangerously high voltages.
